To "Boccaccio, the politician" is dedicated an artbook, that is easily downloadable and divided into the the same sections of this tour: history, itinerary, further insights, information. The artbook will give you more detailed information about Boccaccio's political career and the public life of fourteenth-century Florence, so that all your curiosities about will be satisfied!

Boccaccio was an all-round intellectual and he was also a man totally involved in the politics of his time. He was the illegitimate son of merchant from Certaldo. He came to Florence as an adult in 1341 and Niccolò Acciaiuoli was his companion of studies and of his youth.

He was a representative of the Commune when the town of Prato was acquired from the hands of the Angevins, and ambassador to the courts of Romagna, Milan and of the Count of Tyrol. And, above all, he went to meet Petrarch to whom he personally delivered, on behalf of the Signoria, a request (never granted) to return to Florence. As in all political careers, Boccaccio's was not lacking in moments of crisis and misfortune, especially in 1360 when some of his most powerful acquaintances were involved in a plot against the regime and his presence in public office came to a sharp halt. Some years later, as his life was drawing to its close, he was appointed by the Republic to read and comment in public the Commedia.
