A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
