The Reason the DNC Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This decision by the Democratic National Committee to block the release of its own post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race seems shocking yet not surprising. Resistant to hard truths, the party's leadership apparatus behaves more like a communications shop than an electoral entity devoted to building a volunteer base to secure victories.

A Climate of Conformity

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed within the Biden-Harris shadow all through this past year. Publishing an official autopsy would have indicated that the leadership are interested to foster public discourse regarding the missteps that enabled the former president to return to the White House. However, the committee is acting as if there are no lessons to glean from the stunning loss from the last cycle.

Our guiding principle: will this lead to victory? If not, it’s a distraction from what truly matters," an explanation that has been offered for withholding the report.

Key Issues an Analysis Could Have Explored

Any valuable post-mortem with any value would not dodge key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Failing to retain among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 proved pivotal in the close recent race.
  • A Decision to Run: The stubborn choice of the incumbent to stay in the race, and an extremely delayed step-aside, is seen by some as robbing the party's base the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the campaign reportedly accommodating corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to confront the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Gaza Effect: The failure to reconsider an approach on a ongoing war is cited as alienating many voters, notably with youth voters, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • Eroding Youth Allegiance: Polling data indicates a huge decrease of votes for the candidate from voters aged 18-29.

A History of Evasion

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a longstanding habit to avoid uncomfortable facts. It echoes a situation where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress supported an incumbent's insistence on running for re-election right up until a catastrophic campaign event led to a change.

Concurrently, large majorities of Democratic voters were repeatedly informing pollsters that they did not want that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Issues

A thorough autopsy would also probe questions regarding where money went, such as what sums were directed to party strategists and advertising contractors over the course of a campaign that managed to spend a colossal amount during the general election.

A Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the blockage surrounding this report is symptomatic of an allegiance toward party leaders who engineered a losing presidential campaign. The message for the party's base – including millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to see what party chiefs say they discovered based on an analysis compiled from feedback from all states.

A political entity unwilling to publicly examine its own failings finds it difficult to break free from the rut which was so helpful to the rival party.
