Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
